ARTE FIERA 2026:CONTEMPORARY ART AT THE CORE OF ITALY’S CULTURAL LANDSCAPE

Following its recent 49th edition in Bologna, Arte Fiera has once again affirmed its position as a central pillar within the Italian art ecosystem. First established in 1974, the fair continues to balance continuity and renewal, this year marking the beginning of a new phase under the artistic direction of Davide Ferri, working alongside Managing Director Enea Righi.

Titled Cosa sarà, the 2026 edition unfolded around an intentionally open premise — one that gestures towards uncertainty, anticipation, and the unresolved nature of contemporary artistic production. Rather than offering a fixed narrative, the fair embraced a sense of suspension, inviting viewers to engage with what remains in flux.

As in previous years, the fair retained its characteristic structure across two main halls, where post-war art and contemporary practices coexisted in close dialogue. This spatial arrangement continues to function not merely as a division, but as a point of connection between different generations, artistic languages, and cultural perspectives.

With over two hundred participants — including galleries, publishers, and institutions — this edition reinforced Arte Fiera’s distinctly Italian identity, while maintaining an increasingly visible international dimension. The return of established galleries, alongside the presence of new exhibitors, contributed to a dynamic and multifaceted presentation.

The curated sections provided some of the most compelling frameworks within the fair. Ventesimo+ revisited 20th-century art through the lens of collecting, while Fotografia e dintorni expanded the scope of photographic practice into more hybrid territories. Multipli addressed the growing relevance of reproducibility and accessibility in today’s art market, and Pittura XXI underscored the renewed prominence of painting in contemporary discourse. Meanwhile, Prospettiva continued its focus on emerging artists, offering concentrated presentations that allowed for deeper engagement with new research-driven practices.

A particularly striking presence at the fair’s entrance was the site-specific installation by Marcello Maloberti, conceived as a symbolic threshold. Suspended between ground and sky, the work evoked both the physical and historical fabric of Bologna, positioning the fair within a broader spatial and cultural context.

Beyond the exhibition itself, Arte Fiera further consolidated its institutional and market role through the introduction of a €100,000 acquisition fund, aimed at expanding the BolognaFiere collection. This initiative, alongside its established programme of awards, reflects the fair’s ongoing commitment to supporting artistic production and recognition.

Extending beyond the fairgrounds, the event also engaged with the city through a series of parallel programmes, reinforcing the relationship between contemporary art and urban space within the wider framework of ART CITY Bologna.

With this latest edition, Arte Fiera demonstrates not only its enduring legacy, but also its capacity to evolve without losing its identity — navigating, with increasing precision, the complex balance between tradition, market forces, and contemporary experimentation.
